Mobile masts in your manor?

More than 30,000 mobile phone masts are already dotted around the UK, a figure which could rise to more than 50,000 by the end of 2007.

Paul Miner, Campaign to Protect Rural England’s Planning Campaigner, said; "Mobile phone network operators continue to be able to put up many new masts without having to apply for planning permission. This means that people could object to an inappropriate mast proposal, and the council might oppose it, but the mast will still go up regardless.

Operators are also under no formal obligation to discuss their overall plans for new masts in an area with local authorities or community groups. Both these issues mean that many councils and local people just don’t know how to go about stopping these things from being erected."

Under the current law planning committees can reject applications for masts on their visual appearance but not on the possible health dangers.

One worried local resident is Julie Baker of The Fairmile Pub in Christchurch.

Above is an artists impression of the 49 ft 3G mast that O2 would build outside the pub if planning permission was granted.

Julie has already organised a local residents meeting and can be contacted on 01202 473499.

In another battle the residents of Branksome Park are currently fighting both Orange and Vodafone over applications for mobile phone masts on their doorsteps. One of the proposed sites at the junction of Western Avenue and Bury Road, is only yards away from a young girls bedroom and right next to a garden where children play. Residents further fear that if these applications are accepted by the council, a TETRA mast application will follow. The residents, who are coordinated by Tracy Holmes, have the full support of the Branksome Park, Canford Cliffs and District Residents’ Association. More information about their campaign can be found on www.branksomepark.com.

If you are concerned, the national organisation opposing mast sitings is Mast Sanity who can be contacted at www.mastsanity.org or on 08704 322377 (Tue-Fri 1-8).
